A tourist who was scuba diving for the first time in New Caledonia, Micronesia died during a Discover Scuba Diving course.

Hiruaki Matsumoto 48, from Japan was taking a course from Noumea Diving when he died.

The dive shop manager said the dive training complied with industry requirements and suggested Matsumoto died because “he panicked”.

Witnesses said Matsumoto surfaced during the dive and screamed for help. Other divers pulled him out of the water and notified authorities.

A helicopter took Matsumoto to a hospital intensive care unit where he died of severe brain damage.
