Midwest Scuba Diving Magazine has just published four new articles. We decided to publish all four articles at one time to keep Midwestern divers amused during our frigid break between seasons. Diving Medicine Myths and Hydration were provided to us by our good friends at DAN. These articles were published in order to raise awareness within the recreational dive community about medical and physiological issues that can affect diver safety. Dehydration has been found to be a primary cause of DCS. Shark Fever in the Red Sea is a well written article by a new contributor Rudolf (appropriate for Christmas) Gonda. Fin Seeker a Recent Shipwreck was written by our good friend Captain Dale Bennett. It is the story of a fishing boat in distress off of Waukegan Illinois and the dramatic Coast Guard rescue that ensued last year. We have photos for the Red Sea article and the Fin Seeker article that we are still editing and will soon publish. Soon after the Fin Seeker sunk last year Captain Dale and I used the shipwreck to accomplish some technical training. It was very eerie to dive on the newly sunk wreck which was entirely intact and pristine. The vessel was in such good shape and laying perfectly upright on the bottom that it seemed as if it was making way underwater! It looked like a Ghost Ship! Click on the navigation bar Magazine Articles and enjoy! Divers Alert Network has supported this publication since we first started four years ago. They were the second investor to sign on after Tina Haigh from Haigh Quarry in Kankakee, Illinois. DAN is a consortium of hyperbaric physicians that operate a research facility and dive safety association out of Duke University, Durham, North Carolina. Dan provides supplemental plans of insurance which protect divers against illness or injury that results from scuba diving. Some plans provide trip cancellation insurance, lost or stolen gear coverage and personal injury coverage for accidents that occur more than 50 miles from home, but are not diving related. Every diver should invest in this inexpensive coverage. You can learn more by clicking on our DAN banner ads. In 2010 I am going to make it my policy that any diver engaged in advanced level training or dive travel must demonstrate that they are covered by DAN. DAN insurance would make an excellent Christmas present for you dive buddies!
