Hello!
I am looking for information regarding shipwreck dives in lake Michigan. Does anyone know if you can do a beach entry to get to any of these sites? I am located north of downtown Chicago (near North Ave beach) and would love to be able to dive close to home. are these beaches diver friendly or could anyone else suggest another location for (near chicago) for such dives?
thanks!

About the only shipwreck accessible from shore in the Chicago area is George Morley. She is located off of Evanston Beach in about 15 feet of water. It is about a fifteen or twenty minute swim out. The wreck is usually marked with a small buoy.

Agree with the Morely being the easiest to get to. It's only 100 yrd offshore at Greenwood street beach in Evanston. You can walk half the way to it. They should be pulling the marker buoy soon if not already! Then it's hard to find since the water can get a little turbid during the off season, still there are some who go out to it! Good luck and safe diving!!

I am new to diving. What is the Lake Michigan diving season? In reference to this wreck, can you sknokel to it or is the depth suited for scuba?

The Lake Michigan season is whenever you can get a boat to take you out! Weather is the true guide! Most of the diving is in drysuits, if you want any of the good dives. many are shallow 45-80 ffw, but you could easily go deep, 300+ffw. One of the most popular dives is the car ferry off Milwaukee, 130 ffw. this can be done on air, with a deep dive cert. Capt Dale still has a boat for charters if you stay in contact with him.

A diver can certainly free dive to the wreck, George Morely. She is in only about 15 feet of water. Just remember to take a flag and float. There are usually many small boats, including sailing dinghys in the area.
