MSD FORUMS - BASIC SCUBA DISCUSSIONS
TOPIC: Lake Versus Ocean

I just began my basic scuba instruction today. I am planning to have my first open water check dives at Haigh Quarry. I am wondering how people feel about diving in a lake versus the ocean. Right now I feel like I would be more comfortable in a lake environment. I hope to eventually be comfortable with diving in the ocean. Any insights or encouraging words would be appreciated.

You should feel very comfortable doing your certification dives at Haigh.  But whether you do them in a lake or ocean,  the certification dives are still in a controlled environment.  There are depth limits for the dives.  The differences would be salt versus fresh water, and possibly better vis in the ocean.  At this time of the year the water temp at the surface and at the platforms will be nice.  You'll get chilled if your instructor takes you deeper during the tour portion of your dives.

Well after you get some dives in and try a lake dive if you have the equipment do try a Great lake dive as things to dive one of the many wrecks some in range of newer divers make Great Lake Wreck diving some of the best to be had with visibility being great!

Ocean dives now if you get to Florida or some Caribbean location,I will stick with the southern USA Atlantic off the eastern coast of Florida can be a BLAST to dive! Most folks don't know you don't need to fly to some stinking third world country as you have some of the best semi Caribbean diving right here in the good old USA!

as one you get the Gulf stream so you get to do a drift dive = a free ride on the Gulf stream warm waters, you get reefs with tons of life within a short boat ride from shore,if your afraid or have concerns with marine life no worries just don't stick your hands in holes, and have a great time! visibility is great and them nasty fish you think will take a nip out of probably will not due to neoprene dose not taste too good! once you dive the ocean you will be back!

Dive safe,

Have fun

One thing to consider is what ocean and your weight trim. Diving on the eastern side of Mexico is warm (75-80), however if you dive on the Pacific side, there is a greater variance (65-75). Another consideration is your weight. Diving in a lake, you might have a thicker wet suit (GET A DRYSUIT). You will need more lead up north then you will down south.
