Hey everyone I'm Nick from Edison Park.  I've wanted to dive ever since I was a kid.  A few months ago I got the opportunity to have my work pay for my SDI open water.  Ever since then I've been hooked.  Last weekend I did my PADI advanced open water and I'm enrolled in Rescue Diver in september.  My intent is to get on the dive team at my fire department and eventually become an instructor part time.  I'm interested in any local diving clubs as I really don't know to many divers.  I'm also looking to check out Haigh for the first time July 13th. Look forward to learning a lot from you guys. Ever since I hit the water I can't get enough

There are two very established clubs in Your area.  They were both originally started as YMCA clubs sirca 1960 but have been independent now for many years.  The Tritons meet in Des Plaines.  The Chicago Aquanauts Scuba Association (CASA) meets at Mr. Beef and Pizza in Mount Prospect.  The Club Federation, The Illinois Council of Skin and Scuba Divers, also meets at Mr. Beef and Pizza.  The Council is a federation of area clubs. Stopping by their meetings is a good way to meet divers from many different clubs.  I will check on the times and days of the meetings and post it here.

excellent thank you very much!

Would it be to much to ask for a breakdown or description of each club or are they all pretty much the same? Just trying to get an idea of where I'll fit in best.

Thanks

The Illinois council's membership consists of clubs, not individuals.  Although membership is open to individuals, I do not believe there are any individual memberships at the present time.

I have been a member of CASA since I was certified by them in 1973.  At that time they were teaching at the High Ridge YMCA on Touhy Ave. in Chicago.  They left the YMCA around 1982 and moved out to the NW suburbs.  They remain a teaching Club.

The Tritons have been around slightly longer than CASA.  They started at the Park Ridge YMCA.  They have also been a teaching club, but I do not think they are teaching any longer.  I know and have known many of their members and they are good people but I have never been a member of their club.

The Buccaneers started out as a dive shop affiliated club.  I started the club in 1996 when I owned a shop in Wheeling.  I sold the shop in 2002 and it went out of business a couple of years later but the club continues to prosper.

To get a feel for the different clubs, their dynamics etc. I would suggest that you attend one or two of their meetings.  Guests are always welcomed at club meetings.  It is a good way to get to know some of their members.

Hello to All;
I just want to clear up what may be a mis-understanding.
The Tritons still have active instructors and we hold classes for club members upon request. If a group of people wish open water training we will rent a pool. Advanced, Rescue, EFR, Dan O2 and PADI Specialty classes are held as demand arises.
Thank You

What time and where is Pearl? I think it's in Wisconsin but not positive.

Glad to hear. My dive trip got cancelled that day.

Pearl Lake is in South Beloit, Illinois.  It is north of Rockford and just south of the Wisconsin state line.  From the Chicago area you go northwest on 90 (toward Rockford).  Exit on 75/51 and go West to 251.  Go south on 251 to Pearl  Lake.
