Is it often that a scuba diver will be attacked by a harmful predator?

It is extremely rare for divers to be victims of shark encounters. Most of the attacks you read about involve snorkelers, surfers, or people kicking or paddling on boogy boards who's silhouettes resemble that of a seal. Sharks are stealth hunters and rarely bother scuba divers at depth: particularly those divers that maintain eye contact and remain calm in the water whenever a shark swims by. Scuba divers don't even remotely resemble a food group to a shark. Scuba divers are ugly and blow bubbles noisely. In general divers are rarely bothered by aquatic preditors -- unless the diver bothers them.

I was once attacked by a bass. I was diving under my boat in Chicago's Burnham Harbor, Lake Michigan. I was cleaning the bottom of the boat and the water was rather warm, so I was diving without gloves. I dropped a tool so I descended to the bottom to pick it up when, all of a sudden, I felt something grab onto my hand. A fish had literally bitten down on the full length of two fingers of my right hand. It backed off immediately and then returned to face me again, threatening to attack again if I did not leave immediately. The attack was so quick and unexpected that I was startled and could have swallowed my regulator when it happened, but there was no actual damage to my hand - not even a scratch. I was just glad that the fish did not have any real teeth.
I have found that some of the smallest fish are also some of the most aggressive. The worst injuries I have seen inflicted by biting fish have been the result of fish accidently (and literally) biting the hands that were feeding them.
