I have a 16 year old son that was trained to dive in 08 when he was 14 years old. He was trained outside the Chicago area, but was trained very well! It is important that you as a parent and your child have a rapour and understanding with the instructor. I felt it important that the training be intense and complete. Diving is learning life support skills and safety should be the primary concern. That is why I chose a NAUI course of instruction for both myself and my son. It seemed as though the PADI curriculum was more based on successful completion rather than making it difficult academically and physically. The PADI instructor actually told me that the focus was on FUN! I would rather the focus be on learning the material at the highest level and dive safety. Go with a NAUI curriculum!
