Would shipwreck diving be appropriate for my 14 year old son? He really wants to go. Wouldnt he need to be guided by a professional?

If you son is comfortable scuba diving, there are many shallow wrecks that would be appropiate for him to dive on if he has an adult buddy to dive with. These wrecks would have much to see without having to go inside the wreck. If he is diving locally, he would need to make sure he has proper thermal protection. Many of these wrecks have a great deal of historical value, so learning a little about the wreck would be a plus.

I have taken my 10 year old junior certified diver (he's now 11) on a couple of 40 foot and above Lake Michigan wreck dives. You don't penetrate a wreck at this age but swim around and over it like a coral reef. 7mm exposure protection recommended with hood, gloves and boots. You have to ensure the dive operator is going shallow as many of them go to the deeper wrecks. Also, the shallow wrecks can have very low visibility depending on how the winds have stirred up the bottom, so he needs to be confident with his diving in those conditions. If you can get a ride to the right depth for his skill level, then it is a lot of fun for you and the kid.
