There are quite a few places to dive in the Chicago area!  There are lots of Lake Michigan wreck dives, ranging from 30-40 feet deep and temperatures in the 65-70 F range in the summer, to better visibility on deeper depths though be prepared for water temperatures below 60 feet in the mid 40 F range.  They can be really neat to see.

If you haven't dived in cold water before, you should first get used to it at someplace like Haigh Quarry in Kankakee.  This is a very popular diving spot, with lots of courses going on and also people going just to hang out with other divers and keep their skills sharp.

If you drop in a local dive shop, they can tell you a lot more.
