I'd like to get some opinions on dive knives. I have a small knife with a blunt tip that I've used to cut myself out of fishing line. But that's it. I keep seeing new divers with massive dive knives and I'm wondering if the scuba training is changing. Are new divers being trained to use these larger knives? Or maybe I'm just seeing a bunch of idiots who think they are going to get attacked by an octopus in a rock quarry.
Tell me what you think.

You're going to use a knife for two things: cutting stuff like fishing line and as a crowbar. A blunt or tano tip knife fits the bill. The important thing is to carry it where you can easily reach it if you're entangled or in some other kind of difficulty. Most wreck divers carry two or more knives attached in different places.

I also have a big old "Mike Nelson" killer-diller I strap occasionally to impress the newbies. :)

Ken is right, get a cutting instrument that fits your needs.
The large 'Bowie' knives are used mostly by the nostalgia divers, (read old guy's).
Many today are using shears, (like scissors), or line cutters. but these fall short on versatility.
Know your needs first!
