MSD FORUMS - GENERAL EQUIPMENT DISCUSSIONS
TOPIC: Protective plastic lens cover for Genesis React Pro

Hello, I am new to the site and have a question. I just returned from a dive trip to California. (Lobster diving!!) We did beach/surf entries and I now have a badly scratched plastic lens cover for my Genesis react Pro dive computer. I went online to purchase a new one plus some spares only to find that they are   $7.95 each!!!   for a PLASTIC cover. I find that price to be outrageous to say the least. Does anyone know of a less expensive source?

Thanks

Danny

That is the correct price for this protective cover. It lists for $10 in the Genesis Dealer reference manual. This is a specialized item for which they must make a mold. There may be only about 1000 of these computers sold each year. How many replacement lens covers are sold each year 100 or 200? $7.50 seems like a fair price.

Thanks for your reply,
However I am going to have to disagree with you. That PLASTIC lense proably cost far under a dollar to make. I can't and won't try to dispute your quoted sales numbers but if you look for the lense cover you will also find that it fits other computers. When the mold was made I doubt that only a 1000 were made. I plan on trying to polish my abused one up for now while I look for alternatives.
The equipment for our sport is expensive as it is (most of the time with good reason). However I feel that this is price gouging a captive client. Sorry but I'll look elsewhere or make my own.

Thanks again for your reply

It's $7.95! If it were $20 or $30 then yeah, I'd be a bit annoyed. But it's only $7.95! How could you say you'll then make your own? It probably won't be a good as the real thing and will cost you more in the end.

It probably costs nearly $7.95 just to take your order and ship it to you.  I wonder what the time spent complaining about it is worth.

It is a specialized item. Definetly worth $7.50. I have had cocktails in bars downtown that cost more than $7 even though I know the whole  bottle only costs $30.00. It is not even worth the time to try to save $2.00 on the protective cover. Bite the bullet and buy it. Spend $10 and buy it from and support a local dive shop. You can save a lot of uselesss time on the internet and develop a relationship that may save you money in the long run. Maybe if you visited a local shop they may even give it to you free. Can any shop help this guy?
