Recommendations for basic gear

As a new diver I am looking to get my gear together. I am looking at dive knives online and some seem like a good deal.

Is there any gear that is o.k to buy offline such as knives and watches etc..?

If you do your homework and know what you want, all of it.

My biggest concern with buying things online is how well things will fit. I can see things like knives and watches being safe, but anything that needs to have a perfect fit (wetsuit, mask, fins etc) should really be bought from a dive shop. Tanks  and dive computers should also only be bought at a reputable dive shop.
Hope this helps!

The only concerns about on-line buying is; If it has to fit, or your life depends on it, buy at your LDS.
Even buying a knife on-line I would not be comfortable with that since you will want to know how the release
works.
Generally, on-line purchases do not have waranty's, and you will need to get reg's, and BCD's serviced annually. Will you LDS service your purchase?

Everything you buy from a reputable online dealer comes with the manufacturers warranty. Fit can be a problem, so I buy exposure suits from an LDS. And my LDS will service anything I bring in (they send it all out), although I get most servicing done at Haigh or Mermet.
