Well I did 2 dives at Haigh Quarry today. I went out to Haigh without a dive buddy as Joe had to work, but I was only there about 10 minutes when Tina Haigh came down to my usual set up location with another diver without a buddy so we teamed up.

Dive 1 site name Tim’s Dive ( ya have to name it something)   Depth of 24 feet for 48 minutes. Vis was 20 feet at best and closer to 15 most of the way do to an algae bloom taking place.

Dive 2 was along the West Wall at a depth of 31 feet for 41 minutes. The highlight of this dive was a close encounter with a very big Paddle Fish.  I mean this thing was a good 4.5 feet long and  swam right at us at a depth about 25 feet and swam past us about 3 feet away. It was truly awesome.

Don't ask if I got a picture  :\\\'(  my batteries in the camera died early in the dive.) I am so pi$$ed cause I doubt if such a great photo op will ever present itself again. I mean this thing was 3 feet away as he swam past us at our exact depth. Well I guess I can only help.

Even missing the photo op of the Paddle Fish it was a great day at Haigh and I met and made another great Dive Buddy.

Don't be so sure you won't have an experience like that again.  I had the same experience earlier in the season, and it was awsome.  I also saw another one a week later, but not so close.   Paddlefish sightings seem to be more common at Haigh lately with the new fish that were donated by the Shedd.

Dean,

I did not know the Shed donated more Paddlefish, how many did they donate and do you have any idea how many are in the quarry.

I have been diving for 2 years now and most of the diving has been at Haigh. I have about 40 logged dives at Haigh and last year did not see a single Paddle.

This year I have seen them 5 or 6 times and still have not gotten a picture of one, but yesterday was heart breaking to say the least.

This fish was heading right at me at about 25 foot depth and swam past me at the same depth as I was and about 3 or 4 feet away. What an oppertunity wasted. I could cry.

I will not give up on this quest of photographing a Paddlefish and hope by the end of this season to have at least one.

Dive Safe and Dive Often.

In the sighting I'm referring to, the paddlefish circled around us for about 15 minutes.  It was feeding and had its mouth ballooned wide open.  You could have stuck your head inside.  My buddy had a decent camera and got a pretty good shot of it.  I use the pic as wallpaper on my computer.

Could you upload that picture to gallery or send it to me and I will. I'd love to see it.

Just uploaded the pic of two different paddlefish sightings.  The good one my dive buddy took on the dive we did May 7th.  The other, I took on May 21st, with some curious bluegills.

Try out this group.  I have been involved with it since day one.  We meet once a month at the Goose Island Brewpub, and are online all the time.  We have sponsered Lake Michigan charters,  possibly a warm water trip this winter, and are frequently at Haigh.  All skill levels are here. http://scuba.meetup.com/105/about/
