Other than Haigh Quarry, where in the chicagoland area is there to dive? I am also wondering if anyone has been to Mermet Springs, would I be able to dive there before completing the advanced academics and skills?

There is a big pond just to the East. It is 300 miles long, 60 miles across and 160 fathoms deep at its deepest point. It is populated with hundreds of shipwrecks and has an average visibility of about forty feet. Sounds like a good place for diving to me.
Safe diving,

Haven't been to Mermet Springs, but it appears to have a wide array of dive depths and attractions. You might want to call them to put your mind at ease, but their website tends to indicate a properly trained OW diver should be fine. (And yes, there's always the big lake to the East!)

Mermet is always fun for all.  There are also crystal clear rivers in southern Missouri down in the Poplar Bluff  area.  These rivers are a reat float and dive weekend.  There is also air and diving supplies at Ozark Dive Company in PB.

Lake Michigan is a great place to dive, with lots of sites to dive and I will post some links,

http://www.wisconsinshipwrecks.org/

A great site,we dive from Milwaukee to Door county and with wrecks from 15' to several hundred all skill levels can be done and some from shore so no need to charter! as Green Bay Scuba has a great shore dive map for the Door county area in Wisconsin,

I dive off my boat in the Portwashington area and we have several wrecks that are great and I will post some video soon,

Lender out of Milwaukee runs to several easy dives for newer divers too,

So dive as much as you can as the waters have warmed up and I got to get some fills!

here is a quick clip I shot on a wreck off Door county in a 109' on a day the vis was down so video is a bit poor but you get the idea,

Dive safe,
