TOPIC: petrified forest in Lake Huron?

I caught an article today on the Great Lakes. (link below) To make a long story short some scientists have been studying how much it has changed in the last few thousand years.  This is what caught my eye:

“There is a petrified forest in 40 feet of water in Lake Huron about two miles offshore from Lexington, he said. Some of the trees have been carbon-dated to indicate they are 6,980 years old.”

I understand it’s possible that what a scientist calls a “petrified forest” might be nothing more a few bits of old wood laying in the mud.  But if it’s more then that this might be a cool dive.

Yahoo and Google came up with plenty of hits for diving in/around Lake Huron but mentioned nothing about a forest - petrified or otherwise.

Anyone know anything about this?

Worst case scenario I could track down the people cited in the article.

Thanks!

I don't know about Lake Huron, but there is one in southern Lake Michigan:

I am not the one who needs mental help. I just need to vent.

The local Dive Shop in Port Huron knows about it, Steve has talked about doing some diving there... give him a call at 810-987-6263. I know he'll be able to help you.

Now I know why they call them GREAT LAKES!!
