I'm a biology major at Indiana University. I would like to study the types of diets that some of the fish in a local quarry experience during the winter for a class project. I have my basic scuba certification and some diving experience. My question is, how safe is ice diving and what are some aspects that I should take into account before I get myself set on it?

There is more to winter scientific diving than just having Basic and Ice certifications. In order to make significant observations of aquatic life you will need to be able to get close to the organisms without "spooking" them or stirring up the bottom. Excellent line handling and buoyancy skills will be required. Closed circuit rebreathers would be usefull. You will need a team of several divers and surface support personnel. Keeping everyone warm is an important logistical concern. You will need to carefully plan everything out in detail in order to be successful.
The expert in these matters is Dr. Lee Somers of Michigan.

YES! Please take Captain Dale's advice. Don't try to do this casually with a basic scuba certification, nor with a PADI ice diving card.
