HISTORY OF THE MINNESOTA COMMERCIAL DIVER TRAINING CENTER

William Matthies founded the Brainerd Skin-diving Supply Co. (now named Minnesota School of Diving) in 1959. It was intended to be a diving retail company, but as soon as the doors opened there were requests for commercial diving work. In 1959, there were no commercial diving companies north of Minneapolis , so the requests for underwater work came to Brainerd. The demand for this type of work was much greater than expected.

In 1989 the decision was made to separate the commercial division from MSD, so a second company was formed and called the Underwater Commercial Divers Co.. Shortly after the establishment of UCD, the staff decided there was a need for a diver training school offering smaller class sizes, and a shorter time frame than the other schools offered at that time, thus creating the InlandCommercialDiverTrainingCenter(recently renamed Minnesota Commercial Diver Training Center).

In 1995, the school formed an agreement with the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities, (MnSCU), whereby all of the diving courses taught by both corporations would qualify for college credit. Since that time these courses have been offered through the Central Lakes College in Brainerd, Minnesota. In 1998, the commercial diving corporation became an associate member of ADCI. (The Association of Diving Contractors International). In 2004, the school was invited to become a member of MHESO (Minnesota Higher Education Services Office). The school runs four classes (7 weeks long, 6 days a week, 10 hours a day) from April through October of each year. Students receive an ADCI diver/tender certification along with various other certifications and are qualified to work offshore, coastal, and inland jobs. Training is conducted at the Minnesota School of Diving building and at various onsite locations such as the Crosby Mine Pits and local rivers. Class sizes are restricted to 10 students allowing more hands-on experience and more instructor contact.

The Commercial Diver/Tender Course includes the introduction to commercial diving apparatus, air manifold operations, diver dress in, dress out procedures, dive station selection, various tending techniques, O.S.H.A. commercial diving regulations, safety procedures, and radio protocol. Some fundamental commercial diving procedures are also studied, such as: diver-to-tender orientation, search patterns, record keeping procedures, basic hand tool techniques, out of air emergency procedures, dive station duties, selecting proper diving equipment, helmets/bandmasks and their uses, establishing underwater work centers, orientation to surface supplied deep diving, multiple in-water operations, underwater inspection and recording techniques, Diving Operations Supervisor training, field neurological examinations, basic oxygen administration, hyperbaric chamber operation, and equipment care and maintenance. Also there will be an introduction to underwater welding and burning, and an overview of non-destructive testing methods. All students will be certified in the use of NITROX, and will receive a certification from TDI as a NITROX gas blender.

Hammerhead, we appreciate your frequent participation on the website. You did not offend or spam. We want to support our advertisers. We also appreciate your willingness to have our subscribers contact you personally about your experiences as a commercial diver. It is a very tough but rewarding profession and it is helpful if an interested individual get both the positive and the negative information. Hope to see you at OW-U.
