The Jim Haigh Memorial Dive will mark its first decade on Sunday July 31st. The Memorial Dive is a celebration of Jim’s contributions to the Midwest diving community. His intuition and vision enabled him and his family to create a habitat which makes Haigh Quarry one of the Midwest’s premier dive training sites. I am proud to consider the Haigh’s as part of the Midwest Scuba Diving Magazine family. Their support has been unequaled.
Attendance at the Memorial dive has exceeded 350 divers over the last 5 years. The success of the event has been made possible by the generous support, sponsorship and donations of Midwest dive shops, independent dive instructors and scuba enthusiasts. Midwest Scuba Diving Magazine will be donating a weekend Florida trip for the silent auction.
Haigh Quarry will continue its custom of matching dollar for dollar all raffle monies and donations. This year’s donations will benefit Soldiers Undertaking Disabled Scuba (SUDS) and Diveheart Military Wounded (DMW). The Haigh family appreciates our veteran’s service and sacrifice.
This year’s event promises to be very popular and special! Keeping in tradition, the Memorial Dive will host live calypso music by Od Tapo Imi, a raffle of scuba gear and diving services and a silent auction. Bring your coolers, grab a picnic table and use the Weber Kettles that are provided to have a tasty BBQ!
As an added bonus, Dan Orr CEO of Divers Alert Network will hold a lecture and book signing at 7pm Saturday; I repeat 7pm Saturday July 30th the day before the Memorial Dive. His discussion will concern the identification of diving hazards and why good divers die. This topic should be of interest to all divers and the lecturer is the foremost authority on the topic.
Midwest Scuba Diving Magazine will be located under our banner at the stone pavilion building. Please come by to say hello or give us some suggestions on our publication. See you there!
