No, the season at Haigh Quarry is not opening this weekend! It will open for the 2012 season on Saturday April 7th, but because of our unusually warm weather Tina has decided to give Midwest divers a chance to scratch their itch. So tomorrow, Sunday January 8th, Haigh Quarry will be open from 9am until 3pm for those of you who are hardy enough to handle it. Bring your firewood, the stone pavilion will provide a warm refuge apre dive. The weather report promises about as good a January day as you will ever get. The water shouldn’t be any colder than the “deep hole” beginning or end of season.

Years ago I had a tremendous amount of fun playing underwater ice hockey in Lake Geneva. We drilled two entry holes about 50-feet apart, sawed off the handles on hockey sticks to about 18 inches. Eight of us entered the hole, four to a team and floated a tennis ball on the ice and then tried as a team to stick handle the ball to the entry holes which were the goals. A line connected both holes. It was strenuous and competitive. A lot of fun! If you get a chance to attend the ice dive at Haigh in February I recommend you try this sport. (for dates and info http://www.haighquarry.com) Unfortunately I am teaching tomorrow and won’t be able to join you. Have fun!
